The art of the chart

Bob Green

The Northwest Analytical range of statistical process control software, including Quality Analyst and Quality Monitor, offers very real, measurable benefits to any process.

It’s a bold claim, but one that holds good for most manufacturing, industrial and commercial processes – and there’s a host of material on the Adept Scientific Download Centre to back it up.

The latest additions are five informative wallcharts, designed to show how you can use SPC software to achieve continual process improvement. The specific topics covered describe how you can

  • monitor your process to ensure quality targets are met;
  • utilise trend analysis to identify and evaluate process variations;
  • analyse production defects to reduce costs and improve quality;
  • study sub-group data to improve quality performance; and
  • report quality data to management and customers.

If you’re already using SPC software (such as NWA Quality Analyst, used to illustrate the techniques) you’ll find these wallcharts really useful to prompt and remind you of the best ways of using the application.

But if you’re trying to make do with a general stats package, spreadsheet or another non-dedicated application, or if you’re not currently implementing SPC at all, they’ll provide some interesting guidance and valuable ideas.

But how does SPC work in practice?

A range of real-world case studies and application stories available from our Download Centre illustrate how SPC has been used successfully in specific application areas such as food processing, electronics manufacturing, mechanical components, packaging, the chemical industry, life sciences, water quality and more.

Other case studies describe setting up an SPC regime, the management of process variations, implementing a quality culture within the organisation and using SPC to meet the requirements of such standards and initiatives as ISO 9000, Six Sigma and Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP).

If you want to find out more about the benefits of computerised SPC, or need some ammunition to present to management, these case studies could be just what you’re looking for.
