The Transient Draining of Liquid From One Tank to Another with a Pump with mathcad
A pump drains liquid from one tank into another identical tank. It is positioned midway between each tank, connected by a pipe at the bottom of each tank. The flow is opposed by friction in the connecting pipe. This worksheet models the transient change in liquid height in each tank.

Energy Transfer Across a Heat Exchanger
Heat is being transferred from a hot to a cold stream across a heat exchanger according to the schematic below. The mass flowrates, input temperatures and specific heat capacities of both streams are known, as well as the heat transfer coefficient and heat transfer area. This worksheet will calculate the temperature of both output streams.

Model of a Single-Component Vaporiser
This worksheet develops a simple model of a single-component vaporiser via a heat and mass balance. The governing differential equations are then solved numerically.

Automatic Optimisation of Controller Gains
A cold oil stream is being heated in a stirred tank. The dynamic change in temperature in the tank is modelled by an ordinary differential equation. The temperature of the liquid in the tank is driven to a set point via a PI controller, which alters the heat added to the system. Rise time and overshoot are minimised via automatic optimisation of the controller gains

2D Linear Interpolation
Linear interpolation is a common scientific and engineering concept - it's the process of estimating intermediate values from a series of X-Y points by connecting adjacent points with a straight line. This worksheet contains a program that will perform 2-D linear interpolation across two independent variables to give an interpolated value of the dependent variable.

Model of a Single-Component Vaporiser under PI control
This worksheet develops a simple model of a single-component vaporiser via a heat and mass balance. The vaporiser maintains a constant temperature via PI control that modifies the heat added. The governing differential equations are solved numerically.

Heating an Oil Stream Through Three Steam-Heated Tanks
Cold oil is being heated by steam through three tanks connected in series. The transient change in temperature in the three tanks is modelled by three coupled ordinary differential equations. The equations are solved numerically. The validity of the solutions is checked by comparing the numerical results to the analytical solution.

Fitting Experimenta Data to the Antoine Equation - Refined
The Antoine equation describes the relationship between the vapour pressure and temperature of a liquid. This worksheet calculates the empirical coefficients for a given set of data. It produces an initial set of values for these quantities using a matrix inverse technique. It then attempt to refine the values; this may not necessarily give a better fit. The worksheet then picks the set of empirical parameters which gives the lowest sum of the squares of the errors.

Product Reviews

"Our work ranges from complex medical imaging research to large-scale mapping and diagrams and we need a tool that is able to handle anything we investigate. With Mathcad, we are able to manipulate and analyse our data quickly while at the same time documenting our work, for sharing and publication. We also use it for pilot studies conducted in support of research grant applications. It is an end-to-end tool for research and development."
Dr. Kenneth Castleman, President of Advanced Digital Imaging Research (ADIR), Houston, Texas

"Mathcad is an integral product for my work... With Mathcad, itís easy to disseminate design calculations because the documents look like real math. Thereís very little I canít do in Mathcad. The main benefits come from the format, which resemble a typed set of calculations. These programs are easier to develop by engineers and easier for others to follow and review since the logic is expressed in a familiar manner. The format is what places Mathcad head and shoulders above other programs of a similar function."
Andre Pavlov, Structural Engineer, Florida Department of Transportation
